April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month – at Frankel Dentistry, we want to bring awareness to the community, so they are educated on the risks, symptoms and prevention of oral cancer. About 91% of cases are linked to lifestyle, so it is not too late to make a change.

The most common risks of oral cancer include:

– Smoking
– Oral tobacco use
– Heavy alcohol consumption
– Ultra-violet light (affects lip cancer)

The most common symptoms include:

– Sores, swellings or lumps in or around your mouth and throat
– Areas of red or white lesions in your mouth or lips
– Loose teeth with no dental cause

Prevention is possible – here’s how:

– Stop smoking and using tobacco products
– Limit alcohol consumption
– Have a strong oral hygiene routine that includes brushing and flossing regularly
– Visit your dentist — your dental team can screen for oral cancer

At every new patient visit, we provide free oral cancer screenings. If you have not been to the dentist in a while, please don’t delay. Make an appointment for your future health! Please spread the awareness and encourage your family and friends to be screened.
